Kidney transplants are the favored medical intervention for anyone diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). At Atlantic Dialysis Management Services, our goal is to empower you to make the best decisions based on your transplant goals. As you begin moving toward your transplant goals, your first course of action should be to speak with your nephrologist about the different transplant options available to you as well as which transplant provider may be the best fit for you. Before contacting a transplant provider, you should speak with your care partner regarding any questions you may have about the transplant process. We also recommend reaching out to your current insurance provider to identify the benefits they will provide to you throughout the transplant process, especially if you are currently covered by a commercial health insurance policy. Many commercial policies do not cover the kidney transplant procedure, but they may provide other benefits relevant to the procedure. Are Patients Open to Transplants?
Every patient can explore the transplant process and see if they are eligable, but not everyone is a viable candidate. There are a multidude of reasons why someone might not be fit for a transplant as follows:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- History of strokes
- Continuous infections
Our Responsibilities
You can rely on your social worker to help you process the broad range of thoughts and feelings you may be experiencing. Your social worker is also an excellent resource for referrals for additional community resources. Your dietitian will review your lab work and help you develop and maintain a balanced nutritional plan – an important factor in making sure you are a healthy transplant candidate. Your nephrologist, nurses, and patient care technicians will provide you with quality dialysis treatment and medical advice that will help you live a healthy lifestyle and achieve your transplant goals.

After completing the transplant evaluation process and being approved for the transplant waitlist, contact your social worker to discuss out-of-state transplant options. Life on dialysis does not mean the end of independent living, and receiving a kidney transplant is by far the biggest step you can take in that direction. Should you choose to take that step, we here at ADMS will do everything we can to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible for you.
What is the Evaluation Process Like?
A patient usually goes through a 3 month-long evaluation process with the transplant evaluation office. This process typically involves various medical evaluations and paperwork. Even if you have a donor, you still have to go through this process and meet the necessary criteria.
What Happens if you are Approved?
Once you get approved as a viable transplant candidate you must wait to be contacted by the transplant facility. There is a 24 hour window to accept the transplant. After the surgey is complete there is usually a 2-3 day recovery period and the transplant facility will follow up with the patient for the first three months after the procedure.

Other Transplant Related Information
The effectiveness of a kidney transplant depends on a number of factors. Organ rejection can occur, but with new medication these are becoming less likely.
Living Donor
A living donor transplant is a procedure in which a kidney is surgically removed from a healthy donor and given to patient with kidney failure.
Deceased Donor
A deceased-donor transplant is a kidney transplant from someone who has recently died and their kideny is removed placed in a recipient with kidney failure.
